Youtube is a powerful, free service that educators use every day to assist with education. But did you know that your school email account permits you to post your own videos to youtube? Or that you can stream with Youtube to students who may not have direct access to your class, or in circumstances of distance learning?

This guide will walk users through both uploading and streaming using Youtube.

Uploading Videos to Youtube

Log into Youtube with your district account. Then, access Youtube Studio.

Use the 'Upload' or 'Go Live' buttons to either upload a video, or go Live and stream.

The buttons are located on the upper right-hand corner of the window. You can also click the "Create" button to be given access to the Upload or Go Live functions.

Choose Upload Video - You will be prompted to select the video you wish to upload.

You can either drag and drop it onto the screen or use the Explorer option to locate the file in a folder on your system.

After selecting the video, it will begin uploading; you will be given the chance to enter the video details.

Going from top to bottom, enter the name, the description, and the particular options for the video. Take your time and go through each option.

In the above picture, you see the option to select a playlist. Creating playlists is a great way to keep a series of videos organized and on-theme; it helps your students or users navigate your videos and stay organized.

Make sure to pay close attention to the Audience options; COPPA requires that you accurately label the video.

These options may or may not be necessary for your video, but it's worth reviewing just in case.

Allowing or disallowing comments is entirely up to you; though, our advice is to disallow comments, just in case. Students can always communicate with you using Google Classroom or other approved methods if necessary.

Move through the next steps.

Choose how to publish the video. Private is available only to you. Unlisted is available only to users who possess the link. Public is public on the internet - anyone can find it!

Once you have chosen, you will be given the opportunity to share the video.

You can find all the videos you have uploaded by going into your Videos tab on the left-hand menu. From there, you can manage your videos.

Livestreaming

Broadcasting live admittedly takes a little more know-how, trial and error, and experience. However, it is an extremely powerful tool, as it permits you to broadcast - live! - to anyone you like.

Select the Go Live option from the Youtube Studio main page.

Attach your camera and allow Youtube to access it.

Fill in the stream details - specify what its called, whether people can comment, and who can view.

If you prefer, you can/should use a third party streaming software. Xsplit and OBS are good examples of free and well-supported broadcaster platforms.

From there, you're off to the races!

Admittedly, livestreaming takes experience, as well as a willingness to experiment and learn new things. However, the potential for distance learning great!
